Not so Coy in a Kasta Saree

Come to think of it, fashion has its way of making comebacks in historical chronology. Similarly, the quintessential Maharashtrian Kasta Saree has come back as a boomerang in the contemporary times. This time for our #sareestory thus, we chose to espouse the much talked of ‘dhoti saree’ of the recent times, which happens to be the modern rendition of the traditional Kasta Saree.

Now, mastering the art this particular kind of draping is not a cake walk, but then every beautiful piece of artwork on this cosmos is a consequence of arduous effort, don’t you agree?  Follow our mentioned easy steps below and add a little practice to that! Wa-lah, you too can don the ‘Dhoti Saree’ like a boss:

Step 1– Drape the saree around the lower waist leaving about 1-2m on the non-pallu end. Now bring the two ends together such that they overlap. Keep the right section over the left and pin the bunch of cloth at the centre.

Step 2– Make pallu pleats and wrap it around your back, bring it to the front and let it fall over the shoulder. Fix it to the blouse like you would normally do.

Step 3-Take the lower ends of the pallu to the lower waist and preserve the pleats. Wrap the entire thing around your hips and bring it to the front. Secure it in the front with a pin at the centre.

Step 4– Now gather the leftover part from left and drape the pleats from the end giving it an impression of a dhoti-like drape.

Step 5– Make the pleats pass in between your legs and tuck it into your back. Keep an eye on the neatness.

Step 6– Now pleat the last falling section in the front starting from the centre outwards. Tuck it at the centre and secure it with a pin.

Step 7– Finally, secure the front drape of pleats covering the hips and brought to the front, from preventing it from opening while you strut.

Follow the above simple steps to accomplish the look that we have achieved.  While we both donned the Kasta Saree draping, we tried to bring about customization in that too.

Keeping whatever is left of the last wedding season binging, I (Roshni) chose a black saree with subtle zardosi work on it. Draping it the dhoti saree way, I customized the pallu further, by wearing it like a cowl around the neck to accentuate the glinting zari cut work on it. I chose to wear a mustard yellow cold shoulder top from @missamoreclothing  as opposed to a traditional blouse to hike the panache. Finally, I chose my favorite nude heels and a sling of the same color to complete the look.

The look Paushali achieved is wondrous in its own ways.  While she went all quintessential about draping the dhoti saree, the tiny changes she endorsed, brought a complete renewed spirit about the look. So while her pallu was traditionally placed, she tied a knot at the end of it and secured the same with a sleek black belt around the waist. The contemporary essence was enhanced with her black crop top from @koovs, a black satchel and her uber cool man shoes.  The way she accomplished this look, makes it a makeshift attire which can be utilized as a workwear as well for the fancy Indian wedding, you might have to rush to from your work!

Beautiful and loved the way you wore the saree. I shall try it. Even I am a big saree fan. I have to wear saree everyday at work and I really enjoy it. Great post and you both look lovely!
